Avengers beat Wood Green
Last Tuesday both Anglian Avengers teams entered round 2 of the new 4NCL online event. Despite being out-rated on every board, the first team managed a brilliant 2½-1½ victory over Wood Green Monarchs:
Manningtree’s Andy Lewis managed to win against former teammate and Suffolk chess prodigy, Adam Taylor, on top board. Andy has kindly annotated the Cooper v Kanellopoulos game (below) from the first round; it features the King’s Indian Defence (KID) opening which lead into a typical action-packed King’s Indian thriller. Andy wrote:
“Dr Panagiotis Kanellopoulos is a computer scientist based at Essex University. He has competed several times in the final of the Greek Championship, and currently plays for Colchester in the North-Essex league. This is his first game for Anglia Avengers, and secured the 1st team victory in our first round match of the 4NCL Online. What a debut!”
Unfortunately the second team were unable to match the first team’s effort and ended up losing 3½-½ against Liverpool. Ian Wallis of Ipswich Chess Club managed to draw to avoid a whitewash.
