In R6, the Avengers 2nd team cruised to an easy 3.5-0.5 victory against an uncompetitive Gonzaga C.
Darragh Moran gifted a piece to Rowland on move 24, but made the best of a bad job by creating a menacing pair of connected passed-pawns. This, however, was never likely to prove sufficient against Rowland’s robust technique.
Ben Cullen doubtless hoped to contain Kyan’s ambitions with a locked pawn-structure in a Caro-Kann Advance Variation, but was unable to prevent Kyan’s eventual break-through on the queen-side for a comfortable win.
Eoghan Casey grabbed Russell’s h-pawn, but castled queen-side into a devastating attack. Nice finish Russell!
Ed played it safe against Peter Carroll’s Modern Defence, and was rewarded with a modest but durable advantage. Possibly missing a technical win in a R+2P v R+P endgame, Ed reluctantly conceded a consolation draw on move 55.
After a second consecutive thumping win, this result takes Avengers 2 to third place in Division 2 / Group A.
